Help with unsmart phone!

This isn't really about computer help, but I'm hoping some saint somewhere can answer this one. My wife has a very old non-smart folding phone, a Samsung GTE1190.

There doesn't seem to be any way of increasing the number of rings on the phone when someone calls it: inside about 10 seconds it cuts out (it's PAYG and there's no voicemail set up or option to do it).

She needs more ring time to get the thing out of her pocket or handbag!

Any ideas please? The manual and Samsung website is no help because all it seems to cover is more recent and/or smartphones.

Hello @Stationmaster , welcome to CF.

Length of ring is usually as far as I’m aware something set by the network. If you call the phone, do you just get a busy signal when it hangs up, a message from the network or does the ring back tone continue?

Thanks for your response. When the phone rings, and isn't answered, it just cuts off. It is displayed as a missed call. Does this help?

It might be worth "trying" to set the ring length - this tells the network how long to let the phone ring before either diverting to voicemail or rejecting the call if VM is disabled.

These codes apply to UK GSM networks - if you're not in the UK then you'll need to check with the phone company, though I will assume you are as I'm not aware of PAYG being a term used elsewhere:

Yes I'm in the UK. I did find these codes but the one for EE won't work on this phone because it involves putting a double X in - and if I'm inputting numbers and stars it won't allow me to switch to text mode!

Are you able to type in say 30 instead of XX? I believe they are there as a placeholder for the amount of seconds you want the handset to ring for.

I haven't tried that, no. But I may have accidentally stumbled on a way to change the ring time by a generally pretty unhelpful EE website! The phone seems to be ringing for longer, so we're going to try it for a couple of days. I'll be back if it doesn't last! I am really grateful for your suggestions.
