Macbook display flickers when external monitor plugged in?

Hi there

I have been given a second monitor by my employer to use with my own Macbook that I log into their system remotely with

Whenever I plug this in though (via a HDMI adapter) both my Macbook and the external display just flash on and off every second. Is there any fix for this as it’s totally unusuable in the current state?

This is really strange - have you been able to try a different HDMI adapter?
